No fewer than 11 of the weather balloons, carrying 18,000 packages of illegal cigarettes, have since been recovered

Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.

Flight Disruptions

The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.

Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.

International Illegal Trade

While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.

Neighboring Country Impact

Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.

Illegal Transport Methods

When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."

International Concerns

The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.

Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
