No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
